The February 9 Killer is an unidentified suspected murderer believed to be responsible for the 2006 strangulation and rape of Sonia Mejia and the murder of her unborn baby. He murdered again in 2008 by strangling Damiana Castillo in Salt Lake County, Utah. The murders were committed on the same day, February 9, hence the name of the February 9th Killer.
In 2009, the unsolved murders of Sonia Mejia in Taylorsville and Damiana Castillo in West Valley City were linked through DNA analysis. The corresponding police departments released a description of the perpetrator as a Hispanic male in his late teens or early 20s.
Prosecutors allegedly know the identity of the killer but have not released a name. His identity remains a secret because the man is serving jail time in another jurisdiction. The district attorney is concerned that if the man is released from jail he could flee if he has learned what he’s facing in Utah. The two different jurisdictions have agreed on transporting the suspect to Utah once the man is released.
This information was presented two years ago and no updates have been made on the case. We can only hope that he has remained in jail or has been transported.
