Vicha Ratanapakdee regularly walked San Francisco’s Anza Vista neighborhood. However, at about 8:28 a.m. on Thursday, Ratanapakdee was attacked.
Violently pushed by an unknown assailant, the stranger crossed the street to approach Ratanapakdee. Choosing to enact violence upon the defenseless elder. Upon being roughly shoved to the ground, Ratanapakdee’s head hit the pavement. Officers arrived on the scene to find the 84-year-old still collapsed. Rushed to the hospital, medical efforts were insufficient and Ratanapakdee passed away on Saturday.
Eric Lawson, Ratanapakdee’s son-in-law described the deceased man being: “Originally from Thailand, he was a nearly blind, gentle person, beloved by his family.”
Antoine Watson is the alleged perpetrator of the cruel and unprovoked attack. The police exercised a search warrant on Saturday night, leading to Watson’s arrest. The 19-year-old pleaded not guilty to both the charges of murder and elder abuse.
The public defender representing Watson is adamant that his client did not try to kill the older man, stating: “Based on what we see as an open-handed push, we will certainly be challenging whether there was any intent to kill. There wasn’t. We will also be exploring any altered mental state that might help us understand why this happened.”
