Last month marks the one year passing of Homero Gómez González, the manager of the El Rosario butterfly sanctuary. González, a former logger, became a staunch opponent of his prior industry. González chose to devote his time and energy to preserving nature and life, instead of profiting off of the environment for personal gain.
January 13, 2020, González vanished, only to be discovered a few days later. Murdered. His body found floating in a well near the very butterfly sanctuary that he gave his life to defend.
The motive for González’s murder remains unsolved. But due to the irregularity of his death (especially given the fact that his corpse carried injuries indicative of torture), it is widely believed that disputes over illegal logging acted as the catalyst in his demise.
