Offensive lineman for the Seattle Seahawks, Chad Wheeler, has been released from jail on a $400,000 bail following his arrest on suspicion of felony assault-domestic violence. The assault began when Wheeler’s girlfriend, who has not been publically named, refused to bow to Wheeler upon his request. He then bodily threw her upon the bed and strangled her into unconsciousness. When she regained her senses, Wheeler allegedly responded: “wow you’re alive?”. She then fled to the bathroom, locking herself inside to call for help.
The police arrived to hear screaming emanating from the apartment. They entered to find that Wheeler had forced his way into the bathroom as well. Having picked the lock, he was attempting to apologize to his girlfriend for his heinous actions. Wheeler was then taken into custody while his girlfriend was rushed to the hospital. There she received treatment for a dislocated arm and face wounds.
Wheeler explained the event as being the symptom of a “manic episode”. Wheeler had previously been on bipolar medication but stopped taking it recently for undeclared reasons. He has since apologized to his girlfriend and disclosed to the public that he intended to leave the NFL and would instead be pursuing help. “It is time for me to walk away from football and get the help I need to never again pose a threat to another. I cannot express my sorrow or remorse enough. I am truly ashamed.”
