A newly instated night-time curfew has triggered unrest in the Netherlands. The implementation of the curfew is intended to curb the spread of Covid-19. But it has so far been met with controversy.
Protestors expressed their dissent by causing property damage and pillaging local businesses over the span of multiple nights. Over 150 protestors were detained by Dutch police in wake of the incident.
The curfew comes at the recommendation of the National Institute for Health (RIVM) in response to the new Covid-19 variants appearing in Europe and is in effect from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte denounced the rioters, stating that they had: “nothing to do with protesting, this is criminal violence and that’s how we’ll treat it.”
