An attack in Tayaran Square, Baghdad caused the deaths of at least 32 people and left over 100 others wounded. The two suicide bombers detonated their vests at the popular market place on Thursday morning.
This is not the first time the square has been scene to such a horrific act. Two years ago another suicide attack took place during which 35 lives were claimed. It was believed this current incident correlates to the postponing of Iraq’s general election, which was moved from June 6th to October 10th. The purpose of which was to allow a greater period of time during which new political parties and voters could register. Anti-Government protesters have been participating in demonstrations against the early elections since October 2019.
The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed the attack as their own. And the US, EU, and UN have all spoken out, condemning the act as senseless violence.
