Endial Thomas was formally charged on Monday for the death of a rollerblader that he fatally struck while driving drunk nine months ago.
Thomas, 26, was driving near Pompano Beach in Florida around 5 p.m. on February 19 when he lost control of his vehicle and hit Aline Palla Acosta, 27, while she was rollerblading along a recreation path.
The 2007 Nissan Murano was sliced in half after striking a tree, and authorities estimate that the SUV was speeding at 96 miles per hour at the time of impact. The driver and his passenger, Melissa Gregoire, were taken to Broward Health North medical center. Both he and Gregoire were in critical condition, but Palla Acosta was pronounced dead at the scene.
Gregoire told police that she and Thomas had been drinking together on the day of the accident. Blood work showed that Thomas had a blood alcohol level of .17 — more than twice the legal limit.
Thomas was arrested on Monday and charged with several criminal counts, including DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and reckless driving. He is being held on a $221,000 bond and has yet to plead to the charges.
