A Brentwood mom has been charged with murder after her 2-year-old son died of a fentanyl overdose last month. Genesis Barrera-Galdamez,22, called the police on September 22 after her son, Jason Kerry Jr., stopped breathing.

Authorities arrived at the residence but were unable to save him, and died on the scene. According to The New York Post, police found multiple drug paraphernalia, including 13 grams of powdered fentanyl, fentanyl residue, and a torch lighter.

An autopsy revealed that 2-year-old Jason had died from acute fentanyl toxicity. People.com reports that the overdose led the boy to become comatose due to brain injury and to suffer paralysis.

Although investigators don’t know how the toddler came in contact with the drug, they believe that Genesis endangered her child by leaving him in a drug-riddled environment. This has not been the first time an incident of fentanyl overdose has occurred.

According to KTLA 5, a similar overdose took place in Santa Rosa, California, a year ago where Patrick O’Neill, 29, and his 13-month-old son Liam died from a fentanyl overdose. Today, Genesis faces felony charges with child abuse, possession of fentanyl to sell, and significant bodily injury. She is being held on a $1,100,000 bail.
