Monday two Philadelphia police shot and killed a Black man holding a knife while onlookers (including his mother) watched. Police were responding to a call about a man with a knife. When police arrived, Wallace was reportedly waving the knife erratically.
An onlooker began to videotape the conflict which shows Wallace approaching the police on the street before the police back up and then shoot multiple times. Wallace’s mother told police beforehand that he suffered from bipolar disorder.
The circulation of this video has sparked protests all across the nation against police brutality on Black and mentally ill lives. Causes like the Black Lives Matter movement are calling for defunding of the police and retraining against the use of excessive force and approaching the mentally unstable.
Wallace’s family has viewed the bodycam footage. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw announced Wednesday that the footage will be released to the public in a couple of days. The incident and previous police visits to the apartment are under investigation.
