Van Passenger Dies After Killing Bicyclist

Two people were killed in Las Vegas, Nevada over the weekend after a “senseless act” caused a collision between a minivan passenger and a bicyclist.

Several cars were driving recklessly along Hollywood Boulevard around 7 a.m. on Sunday when a minivan broke away from the group and veered toward a sidewalk where two people were walking. The passenger of the van hung half of his body out of the vehicle in an attempt to slap the couple.

After failing to make contact, the passenger made a second attempt to prank a pedestrian by hitting a woman in a bike lane. The bicyclist, who was 55, fell to the ground and suffered fatal injuries.

Although the passenger successfully knocked the woman down, the momentum of the strike caused the man to fall out of the minivan himself. The passenger hit the asphalt with great force for about 150 feet and then collided head-first into a traffic light. He was killed instantly and the van’s driver sped away from the scene.

In a news briefing on Sunday afternoon, Metropolitan Police Department Lieutenant Ray Spencer said that calling the act “‘senseless’ is an understatement.” He added that, “there’s no reason behind, that I can tell you, as to why it occurred — other than complete stupidity.”

After combing the area and following leads from witness statements, Las Vegas police identified the driver as Rodrigo Cruz. Cruz, 22, was arrested on Monday and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for one count of open murder, violating his duty to stop at the scene of an accident, and violating the conditions of his parole.
