A police officer just two weeks away from retirement was shot and killed Tuesday. Houston police were called to assist a woman taking her belongings from an apartment after calling in multiple domestic abuse claims against the suspect that were dismissed by previous officers.
The suspect was identified as Elmer Manzano who shot Police Sgt. Herald Preston multiple times. Preston was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Another officer, Courtney Waller, was shot in the arm but has since recovered.
Manzano and his 14-year-old son were also shot and transferred to the hospital where they are expected to make a full recovery. Details of what led up to the incident are still under investigation.
