August 12, 2020, police in Japan stopped motor vehicles to inquire drivers about the disappearance of Shuichi Ichikawa and Rumiko Masumoto. The Japanese government says this young couple was among the 17 individuals abducted to North Korea in the 1970s and 1980s.

The couple went missing after visiting the beach to watch the sunset and were never seen again, similar to the other abduction cases. North Korea confirmed that the pair were in Pyongyang but that they had since deceased of natural causes.

The case remains on-going as Kagoshima police continue to investigate the exact fate of the couple 42 years later.
